NEF Rifle Suggestions

I am really attracted to the NEF rifles for their price. I'd like some honest opinions about them.

- How is the extraction?
- Are they reliable?
- How is accuracy?
- What caliber do you recommend for deer?

Thanks[:)]

I've shot prairie dogs with my brother's 17HMR out to 200 yards. I'ts incredibly accurate and has a nice trigger.

I have a friend who has one in 223 and we've both taken a lot of prairie dogs with it. It, too is accurate, reliable and with hundreds of rounds in a wide variety of ammo, we've experienced exactly zero malfunctions. The trigger is reasonably crisp and very consistent.

I have a Savage 112J in 22-250 with a Canjar trigger that is obviously a joy to shoot, but my next varmint gun will be an NEF, without question. For the money, it's a slam-dunk.

Caliber depends on the terrain you plan on hunting.

The barrel swap program lets you put any centerfire caliber barrel on your NEF centerfire action. Just send it into them and they'll fit any barrels you want. And they come in dozens of calibers.

They're a decent shooting economical rifle. I'm not a fan of external hammers but that's just my opinion. We've had 5-6 around here and the only thing I can fault is the extraction. The new ones may be different but the ones over 3-4 years old only had a spring loaded ejector that occasionally failed to pop the case loose. I sold a guy a 223 that never did get any better. Last I heard from him he had 3" of brazing rod rubber banded to the muzzle to drop down the barrel to knock out a stuck case.

I have a NEF Handi Rifle, originally bought w/ a 45/70 barrel. Since then, I've sent it back to the factory in Gardner MA twice (nice people) for retrofit barrels - .223 w/ rifle sights and .410 shotgun barrel. Well, lemmee tell you, that NEF can outshoot my Ruger Mini 14 24/7. It's a sweet, compact, versatile little unit w/ deadly stock sights and I do not begrudge the space it takes up in my long arm safe. The 45/70 bbl is deadly, too and the .410, a great lightweight bird gun that patterns well.

Any more folks out there with NEF rifles? What caliber do you suggest for deer and black bear at up to 125 yards?

    Thanks

It would be hard to choose but they make 7/08, 280, 308, and 3006 and any of these will do what you need. If you want a real boomer go with the 45/70.

I collect single shots not the expensive ones i would guess i have over 50 most are nef or H & R most barrels interchange.I made headspace gages when i went to tool and die makers school in the 70's
have only found a few that dint fit,ect.28ga 280,22-250,7mm x 64 brenske.the older ones with the ejectors get dirty and stick,i now use cleaner podwers with them. Rimmed cartridge cal i think are better for this type. i have some odd ones 32 ga,44XL shot, and 219 zipper.one of my favorite type guns.get a 30-30 for deer and extra barrel 20 ga.tks hedge[:D]

I've had them in 22hornet, 223, 270 and 4570, the hornet and 223 would stick when I tried to eject the spent round so I polished the chambers with my dremel tool that worked real good. As for what cal 270win[:D][:D].

308 would be my first choice; 270 a strong second.
