Took my vintage 92 win. 44-40 out of the vault yesterday & shot it for the first time. At 75 yrds it was about 8" left. Needed to move the rear sight dovetail. Used a small block of pine & a hammer to move it. Should a guy use a brass punch instead? Didn't have one at home. My Marlin 30-30 could use some adj also.

Nothing wrong with wood if it will move it. I use a brass punch and a hammer because you get more force than wood and still won't mark the sight. I have had some that took a good bit of tapping to get them to move.

actually, if you have an empty brass case, that will work in place of the punch sometimes. Also, some of these guns that have been sitting for a long time might need a little extra persuading. A 1/4 inch brass rod about 3-4 inches long and an 8 oz. hammer should work just fine. you might want to give it a little shot of breakfree or WD-40 on the sight about an hour before you try to move it.

We use deer antler most of the time but we have used nylon and brass punches and hardwood dowels. Anything non marring should be fine.
