What's considered typical in terms of distance to a standard
bullseye-type target on a handgun range?

As Bpost said, standard bullseye distances in the USA are

    50 yards (usually outdoor)
25 yards (indoor and outdoor, also for PPC-type matches).
50 feet (indoor, mostly when the range has limited space).

For European pistol competition you have

    50 meters (eg free pistol).
10 meters (33 feet, air pistol).

Lastly, 7 yards is a standard distance for shooting "combat" type targets, because that represents the most common real life shooting distance. (IE inside of 21 feet).

Well in the state of Michigan, law enforcement officers are trained to shoot starting on the 12 yard line, using thier sites. They also do point shooting drills at 5 and 2 yards. Most assaults will come from 12 yards or less, most often 10 feet or less. That is if you are practicing for self defense. I am not a professional competition shooter, so I dont know what they do.
