Difference in Accuracy-Garand Question

I'm looking at getting a CMP garand. Just wanted to know if there would be much of a difference in accuracy between a correct grade barrel with throat erosion of less than 4 and a muzzle wear of 2 or less and a service grade barrel with a throat erosion of less than 5 and a muzzle less than 3.
Thanks.

Not an easy question to answer, as CMP tends to "under promise & over deliver".

So, to answer your question, "probably not". Each digit of the TE & MW measurements represents .001" of an inch, a pretty small difference.

Most folks don't use accuracy as the deciding factor. The collector, correct, & service grade rifles usually have pretty good bores. It's only when you get down to rack & field grades that you expect to get a bad bore.

If you are serious about accuracy the lower the MW the more accurate your barrel should be. That said you can get service grades with MW's below 2. If you can't make a trip to the North or South Stores then just put a stickum on your order requesting the best barrel possible for a "shooter". While there are no guarantees the CMP people try very hard to meet the customers wishes. You may have a beat to heck stock when your service grade arrives...but your barrel should be nice. For what it is worth I have bought several field grades with MW's under 2. In fact one of my field grades won this year's Michigan Rifle and Pistol Association annual JCG Match with a 285-3X. Not the highest score that that rifle has attained but the conditions this year were nasty. The point is that the rifle beat several CMP correct, select and service grades including several which had been tuned before the match.
If the CMP bubbas know that you are going to be shooting the rifle in JCG matches they will do their best to get you a decent barrel. Beach

P.S. One final thing if you can get a field grade with a decent barrel you can use the money you saved to buy a boat load of CMP Greek ammo to prep for the matches.

Thanks guys. I was curious if there would be much of a difference, but it doesn't sound like it. I was leaning toward to service grade before I asked, and that's probably what I'll get. Sadly I'm way too far away to make it to one of the stores. [V] Sure would love to go and see what they are like and hand pick a rifle. I'd probably spend the day there and spend way too much. [:D]

I went in and walked down the rack with a muzzle gauge- and found a rack grade with a ME of 2. It had other issues (a rather trashed stock) so you never know what you'll get.

Even so, my current M1 (danish) has a ME and TE both of 5 and it will still keep them all in the 10 ring from a bench...
