Are vintage winchester trappers with factory 15" barrels legal to own? I have heard that a letter from ATF may be needed for ownership. Please advise.

If a Trapper with a barrel length less than 16 inches has already been examined and verified to be Factory original and authentic and subsequently removed from the purview of the NFA and added by model and serial number to the Firearms Curios and Relics List (SEC. III: Weapons Removed From The NFA As Collector's Items And Classified As Curios Or Relics Under The GCA), then it is clear for ownership by anyone that can meet the basic requirements for gun ownership. However, if it is not listed then it will need to be authenticated and classified before ownership is permissible.

You can use the following link to get to the Curio and Relics page and follow the links from there to see all the serial numbers of the guns that have been removed and reclassified as a Curio or Relic.
