I know each gun likes its own fodder however I have a youth in 4 H shooting sports who is doing verry good. He wants to try and step up a notch.
I am working on a target rifle for him to use. What do you suggest to start on ammo . Cost is an issue as his parents are not much help now. I give him most of his shells now.

Thanks

In my opinion: Eley Tenex is the way to go.

Hello go to CHAMPIONS CHOICE www.champchoice they have many brands and many prices I like S.K. JADG they make a very good ammo for sort of middle ground on price . You need to ask about a varity pack to try different brands ask to speak to homer and tell him it is for a Jr. shooter. Also DCM/CMP has ammo available for VERY good price some does not work well in semi auto pistols but all shoots very well in rifles.

Edit Edit[:0][:0]Champions choice is VERY reasonable on shipping and has fresh ammo you can ask for a certain LOT number or a bunch of different LOT NUMBERS and shoot them all find out what is best in YOUR rifle and then order a CASE of that LOT number. Your local store will get 5 to 10 boxes and you find what you like and then when he gets replacement it might be a different Lot and not shoot worth a S**T. [xx(][V] Your mileage may vary.

CCI Green Tag shoots very well in my $45 Mossberg model 44US-D.

One of the better deals,if you have a Dick's Sporting Goods, is Federal Champion target standard velocity 22 LR. They have an exculusive deal with Federal to sell it. I and several others in my gunclub have had good results with it at $2 a box of 50.

Eley Tenex, CCI Greentag, Fiochii makes a very good match cartridge- even Wolf is making a "match" 22 LR. I used to love Tenex, lately not so much. Expect to pay from $4.50-12.00 per 50 rds for true match ammo. You might check local dealers, and save the appreciable cost of shiiping until you find what work well for the rifle you have. I shoot a fair number of older Mossberg rifles, and they seem to be partial to the CCI, and Fiochii Match PISTOL ammo when I can find it. Other than true match grade ammo, the bulk Federal has shot about as well as anything else I have tried. It is also less than 1/10 of the cost of match ammo. Remington next, and Winchester white box was bottom of the heap. I also note that Winchester has had at least 2 recalls on 22 ammo- a whoopsie with overloaded rounds.

It also works great in my Ruger MK2 pistol and my Mossberg 42.

I agree with the other posters about the Ely 10X and other top shelf ammo being the best. But you said you are dealing with a youth shooter. Getting a decent 22 standard velocity round as mentioned will be the most cost effective. You will not find decent standard velocity ammo at Wal Mart.

As Perry Shooter mentioned the folks at champion shooters supply are great. the staff there will not steer you wrong or sell you something you don't really need. Getting a brick or two of Wolf target ammo would not be a bank wrecker.

I've actually had good results myself with that ammo.

Ultimately you have to match the ammo to the gun, and there in no substitute for doing that.

Curently Lapua Midas (L or M) is winning most of the championships however Eley (EPS, Ten X or Match) is also a great choice. Althought I can tell you what the best ammo is and what is winning all of the matches it must be understood that each and every .22 LR has different wants and needs for the ammo that it will shoot the best. The only way to find the best ammo for your gun is to buy a small amount of each type-manufacture-lot and try them in your gun. The name of the game is consistency, just remember you can lose a match by on shot that was off by .1000th. I personally lost the California State Championship in 1992 by 1x, the guy who beat me (Bob Foth) ended up taking the Silver Medal later that same year at the olympics.

Don't forget to try Wolf Match Extra, it is really great ammo and it is not as expensive as most of the other true match choices.
