I would pretty much second what Larry the Moonshiner said.

I would get a CZ in 308 or 30-06 if you do not reload, if you do, then 6.5 x55 Swede is a wonderful and highly accurate round.

    what kind of terrian?
308 is certainly as good as any deer caliber. i have one and certainly am happy. accurate, powerful enough, flat enough, modest reciol, accessible ammo. 270 is also great on deer, have 2 and love em both. no deer will ever know the difference between a 308 or 270 or 7mm08.
a good trigger is much more important than specific caliber (within reason), and savage accutrigger is great.
it's where ya hit em, not what ya hit em with. get a good scope, not a cheapie, with modest magnification, wide field of view, and good eye relief

    ba71corkey,

Are you hunting out West?, back East? South in the swamps or maybe in Texas? all different criteria for what I would pick in a rifle for deer hunting. Ranging from flat shooting to heavy and slow.

My personal favorite is the .257 Roberts. Very flat shooting and with plenty of up close or far away knockdown power. Up close the bullet will usually tear up pretty well and not go flying for a long ways beyond it's target.

If you want good performance in a variety of situations...and low recoil too...it's hard to beat a .260 Rem.

I like the 7 MM Mauser. Mine is a Ruger 77.

Depending on what terrain I'm hunting I use either my Ruger model 77 in 257 Roberts or my Marlin model 336 in 30-30. Your milage may vary

I almost always grab my savage 99 in 300 savage for deer hunting. An old classic that still gets it done.

A bolt action made by Remington or Savage in .308 Winchester would fit the bill for most deer hunting in the US...with the esception of some long range situations out west. If recoil isn't a problem, then try out one of the new short magnum calibers (but only if you can actually make those extra long range shots) that the 308 might not handle....
