Can't find anything in my references, about a "Sherwood" rifle chambered for a "300 cartridge", made by Westley Richards.

Because of the cartridge designation, my WAG is that it's whats called a "Rook Rifle". These were single shot, small game rifles made by a number of British manufacturers. Most date to the years prior to the First World War, ( circa 1914 ).

Quality photos would be required for any further help in identification.

Got You covered..Rufe-Snow got you in the Ballpark...but took a little digging to get some History on the Cartridge..
The .300 was introduced around 1900, as near as could be determined, and used in Westly Richards and other British Small Game and also used as a Target Round.
Rarely encountered in the U.S...Most guns of this caliber were brought home by WW1 Vets...Ammo was hard to comeby..and never really caught on for this reason..The .300 Sherwood is a disirable Collector Cartridge...And the Round is on a Par with the .38 S&W.
The "Rook" is Crow Like European Bird...Also the Westly Richards .300 was designed as an answer to the .310 Greener cartridge......

We really need some pictures and more information, but it sure sounds like it could be a rook rifle chambered for the 300 Rook.

The .300 Sherwood was one of the most powerful of the rook cartridges. It was only made on the strongest rook actions and often was used for roe deer hunting. If you email me pictures at: joel_black@netzero.net I can help you identify the model.

Don't get confused: The .300 (.295) Rook Rifle is a completly differant Cartridge from the .300 Sherwood.......Best..
