I have a seater die I would like to open up a couple of thousands of a inch, since the die is hardened I have been told it has to be honed the couple of thousands. What kind of hone do we use?

Try a cloth bore mop and grinding compound.

    5mmgunguy,

I'm kind of seconding what JustC is asking. A sizing die yes. But a seating die? If you have to open up a seating die it would appear to me that you may have a sizing die that is out of SAAMI specs if it won't take the case down to at least fit comfortably in the chamber.

I recently had to open up a Lee .45 Long Colt seating die. I made a mandrel out of a 1/4 20 bolt with both the bolt head and threaded portion cut off. The bolt was then cut length wise with a hacksaw. Into this cut I placed a strip of fine grit emery cloth. This was wound tightly and lubricated with WD 40. The uncut end of the bolt was chucked into the collet of a electric drill. Using this method I was able to open up the ID of the seating die successfully.
