kimber recoil springs

i took my kimber to the range today and noticed that the recoil was really starting to hurt my wrist. last time i shot it, it hurt just a little bit. this was all using the same grip and ammunition which leads me to believe that the recoil spring is due to be replaced. i've put many many rounds downrange and this is the original spring. my question is: what # spring do i need? also, if i go with a stiffer spring, will there be less felt recoil? if so, how stiff can i go without suffering functionability? i usually shoot factory or handloaded ammunition a little on the hot side... thanks guys.

I have a spring set in varying weights. when I shoot a new round that I like the accuracy of, and plan to use for awhile, I keep going up in spring weight till the gun will not cycle reliably, then go back 1 spring. The factory spring in a Kimber 1911 is 18#.

for factory loads 16#. for the heavier loads you will need a spring that is any where from 18# all the way to 28#. "hot" loads start at 20# or 22#. there are spring kits available with 1 each 18.5, 20,22,and 24. it is a try/fit for your reloads. coil springs do wear out or "set" after extended use/storage. they do not last forever.

I'd start with a new 18# and go from there.
