Here are some pix of Colt New Service.....
In second picture there is a H over and to the left of the V. It is hard to see in the picture.
In the third picture thre is a H between 10:00 and 11:00.
In the fourth picture the fly is just freeloading.

Your wifes heart was in the right place, but unfortunately the revolver has many issues. All you can say, as far as I can see, is that it was a original Colt N.S. that has been extensively reworked/refinished. Next time it would be best if you went with her, if she is kind enough to want to buy another gun. From the appearance of the Colt, someone might have taken advantage of her.
I had figured out the first part when I opened the box and laid eyes on this. The part I dont get is the lack of serial numbers where they should be. Thanx.
The serial number is right where it should be, on the butt next to the lanyard hole.
I see pics of new service revolvers earlier and later ones their numbers are on the frame and crane. Just askin
