I am looking at a 1873 SRC in 3840 built in 1890 the stock looks like it has varnish as a finish, would this be correct.

Gunbuff, welcome to our forums here on Gun Broker.

I am sure our notorious expert Bert H will be along sometime soon to help you with this. He is an absolute wealth of information, and has done a lot of wincher history studies at the Cody museum. If it is an OLD Winchester, he knows it. It would be prudent, that if you can, follow the sticky thread at the top of the "Ask the Experts" forum, and post some pictures that are clear, and include any makrings.

    Hello GunBuff,

The best answer I can give is "maybe", but "not likely" is closer to the truth. 99%+ of the Saddle Ring Carbines were made with oil finished stocks. Typically, varnish was not used on the Model 1873 except for the small number of Deluxe guns, and even then, it was only used on roughly 50% of them.
