Springfield Armory Mainspring Housing Switch???

I figure there has to be a difference in the mainspring housing pins, between the Springfield Armory current design and the original, but I don't have an original for comparison.

1911a1fan sent me a Pachmayr mainspring housing and innards for this gun (THANKS!!!) because I wanted to replace the factory housing and its built-in lock. Got the original assembly out with no trouble. Got the new assembly assembled with no trouble. Slide housing into frame, and try to insert the pin, and it is a no-go.

When I examine both assemblies, I see that the mainspring plunger barely protrudes into the hole for the mainspring housing pin on the Springfield part, but much further on the Pachmayr, far enough to keep the pin from passing through.

Got any ideas?

I have had to reach in from one side of the pinhole with a 1/8" punch and pry up the plunger enough to get the pin started past it from the other side. Then just tap it the rest of the way through until the retainer snaps into the center groove.

I can only reference guns I worked in the past. Some depending on the strength of the mainspring and dimension(s) of the plunger were quite hard to replace. You might consider using a smaller diameter slave pin with a tapered end to assemble the mainspring housing. Once everything is lined up correctly, press the base of the mainspring against a hard surface and put the correct pin in.
