I have a question about the 69 winchester. I have one that is marked model 69 on the barrel for short, long, and long rifle. The bolt cocks on opening and not on closing. The rifle is in nice condition, it has a peep site and a hooded front site and no 3/8 inch dovetails in the barrel. Is this an original model 69 since it has the bolt that cocks on opening? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how I missed seeing this post/question, and please excuse my lengthy delay in responding to it.

I needed to do a little research to answer your question accurately.

Winchester introduced the Model 69 January 1st, 1935. The first rifles were delivered to warehouse stock on March 15, 1935.

The earliest rifles were made with a mechanism that cocked the rifle by closing the bolt. That mechanism was changed to cock the rifle on opening of the bolt in late 1937 (the change was authorized on November 30, 1937) and was designated as the "69A". If your rifle is marked "69", but cocks on opening the bolt, it may be a transitional rifle that was made in the latter part of the year 1937. It could also be a piece parts rifle assembled many years later.
