Drilled barrel???

I was handed down a near mint condition Colt Police Positive Target in .22 WRF, complete with box. The interesting thing is that the barrel has been drilled to a depth of approximately one inch. Anyone know why this was done? There are no threads so I don't think it was for a silencer.

I have near mint Colt Police Positive Special Target with Patridge sights, chambered for .22 WRF with the original box. Interestingly, the barrel has been drilled from the muzzle approximately 1 inch down creating an exact 5/16 Inch diameter. There is no apparent damage around the muzzle or to the barrel itself. This was my granfather's revolver who was an avid target shooter. Anyone have any ideas why the barrel would have been drilled?

    Thanks,

    Will

I have seen a lot of rifles counterbored like this, if a rifled firearm is cleaned improperly for a long time the rifling at the muzzle gets damaged. How does it shoot now?

I have never shot it. Probably never will. Don't know about the improper cleaning. Gramps was a skilled competition shooter and hunter but I guess I'll never know.

this is a cheap/easy way of 'recrowning' a barrel, usualy seen on over-cleaned rifles.
