Weaver Variable doesn't vary....much

I recently bought a gun with a Weaver V 4.5 scope attached to it. The scope power adjuster ring moves freely from 1.5 to 2.5 and then stops. It will not turn any farther. It easily moves back and forth between 1.5 and 2.5.
It is sighted in and works fine except I can't use the other magnification settings.
Any ideas on why it stops or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Martin

It is permananently broken. Please remove from your rifle at once, and mail to me at........ (Not gonna fall for that, huh?) It is POSSIBLE (not for certain, POSSIBLE) that the lube on the moving parts has dried and gummed up- with part of the path of moving parts beig blocked. Would try a good spray lube, working the adjusting ring back and forth, see if that helps. Had a nice old BAR I inherited that had been hanging on a wall rack for years, the 3-9 scope was "hung up" at about 4.5-6. Anyway, it won't hurt to try it.

Stupid answer? Is the adjustment running up against the scope rings?

Avoid the spray lube. That stuff will penetrate into the scope and coat the lens...rendering the scope unusable.

The power ring is connected to two cells internally. Those cells have a sort of bearing that rides in a slot. They do indeed tend to dry out...and require a bit of special attention.
Requires tearing down and repairing, generally.

As mentioned above..be sure that the rings don't interfere...and also that the objective lock ring isn't binding the power ring.
