Will the Ruger Mini 14 in .223 chamber and shoot 5.56 military? Or is there a Mini chambered for the 5.56?

    Thanks

    Mike

What's it worth? Preban mini-14 with folding stock. Blue finish - not stainless. It's been shot plenty, but not beaten.

    Thanks -

I have a mini 14 186 series that I want to scope. I was planning on using the weaver # 48646 mount, but after reading more on the subject, it looks like Ruger moved the ejector pin to the lower section of the bolt face making it a top eject. I have not yet fired this gun and can not say for sure. Anyone know when and why this change was done? Would this cause a problem with ejection like the empty rounds hitting the scope? If so , I do not know of a scope mount that sets the scope above the ejection port that would work. Any comments, suggestions or ideas appreciated.

I was wondering if there are aftermarket mags that function as well as the factory mags for the mini 14?

Geting ready to purchase one ( maybe tomorrow), as far as cleaning a semi auto firearm ( never owned one) what should be used as far as functional parts? Oil or a gun grease?

    Hello,
Sorry for the long post but any help would be great.

Im looking at buying a new ruger mini 14, my local walmart is selling one ( hardwood, black barrel) the price was a little over $600, i have seen these guns for around $800+, should I be cautious about buying a rifle from walmart? What about this rifle should i be looking at to know I am geting what i want as far as different models of the mini 14? What would be a fair price on a new mini 14?

I also have a friend who is willing to sell me his remington 770 camo/stainless steel in .300 win mag, i have read horrible reviews about this gun as well as reivews saying it is a very accurate rifle, i am wanting a rifle to have in the woods and not worry about geting it banged up alittle, the rifle i am using now I love but want something i can be ok with geting ruffed up. He is offering me the gun for $300? Is this a fair price, or should I keep looking?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I may have the opportunity to purchase a Mini 14 in excellent condition for $300. I mentioned this deal to a friend, who was appauled and told me that they are junk. I am no expert, but upon inspection of the rifle, it looked to me to be the same system as an M-14, (just in .223) which I know to be a good rifle. I know the mini-14 has been around for a long time. If anyone could let me know if its worth buying.

What Probably needs to be done with an aftermarket Mini 14 magazine to make it function, is to take both magazines apart, and re-form the aftermarket follower to look like the factory follower as close as possible.

I have a Ruger mini-14 and would like to make some improvments/conversions to it; shorten barrel, add flash suppressor, improved trigger, buffer, rail mounts, ect. Make it tactical.
    What do you experts suggest?

Will the new Ranch models 223 also chamber the 5.56 NATO?

If you hit search and type in Mini-14, you will see that opinions range from junk to great gun. The answer to your question depends in part on what your friend means by junk and what you intend to do with it. I have owned more than a few mini's and have found magazines to be junk but never the rifle. Usually, but not always, people who say it is junk are referring to the fact that it is not the most accurate rifle out there. As the barrel heats up, harmonic vibrations seem to get worse and groups, which were not that tight to begin with, open up. They can be made more reliable but expect to shell out several hundred to quite a few hundred dollars. I like mine for what it is, a short range self defense piece that has never jammed or had a mechanical problem. But, it is not an AR.

My only complaint has been the lack of accuracy. With factory mags, I have never had a problem. My best group at 100 yds runs about 3".

+1 its a rugged reliable design. Never heard of any conflict with wolf ammo that I am aware off. They are a gun you shoot a great plinker. I have mine set up for coyotes but I wont be shooting past 150 yards so it is a great rifle and in that situation I only need one shot.

for 300 bucks?take it.if you dont like how it shoots, buy up some after market "tactical"accessories(especially mags)and salt it away.you may turn a tidy profit after the next election.or put your money towards a used AR15.

I still have one, and will likely keep it.
It does not shoot any better than decent AKs, and probably would not stand as much abuse before failure to function (dirt etc in action).

BUT, if it is in VERY good condition, $300 is safe.
With that thought, you could buy it, use it with care, and recover your money.

Buy it. I shoot sub 2 inch with mine at 10 yds and I'm a bit rusty. The sights are not the best, but will do for what the gun was designed for. stick with factory mags if you can afford them. Remember it was not designed for accuracy but reliability, and it is reliable. Pie plates at 100+ yds with iron sights is easily accomplished. If you need something more accurate, buy something else. At $300 it is a steal eapecially if it is not the old model ranch or a 180 series.

I have one that was bought new in 86, I think. Very reliable shooting gun, not a tack driver though. I have about 12 mags for it and one will always jam, but not any of the others. I think for 300 greenbacks you can't go wrong even if you just what to flip it. I have a folding stock on mine and keep it around for home defense, accurate enough for that.

I have owned 4 different ones in the past and still have one. It will group under 2.5" at 100 yards and I have taken a couple of yotes with it. Completely reliable with factory or PMI magazines and just a fun gun.

I added the FS a couple weeks ago, just for the fun of it.......
