when I acquired this tool recently I thought I was buying an engraving tool, but after researching it a little further, this CORBIN tool might actually be used to put grooves into bullets? which is somewhat like engraving I guess..does anybody know for sure what the name of this tool is and it's purpose?

Sure looks like a screwdriver to me. I doubt it is the same Corbin who makes bullet swaging tools.
The Corbin cannelure tool is a crank driven roller affair.
    See at: http://www.corbins.com/hct-1.htm

Probably a screwdriver from the Corbin lock and door hardware company.

High grade screwdrivers like yours with ebony handles were included in fine cased shotgun sets.
It looks like the shank was squared to put a wrench on it (bad practice).

could it be possible if this Corbin screwdriver could be a specialty screwdriver then, used for locksmith work? maybe squared shanks insert thru certain antique locksets? I think I recall seeing square access "holes" on old antique locksets?..this "item" has definitely NOT been altered
