finally bought an sks at last gun show. russian model from tula arsenal, all matching number. gun looked almost new from a use standpoint, some dings on the stock. at the range had problems with failure to feed, bullet hitting the end of the chamber. also it would eject the last round in the magazine along with the last piece of fired brass. was using wolf 122gr ammo. would the 139gr round be better? any help with problem would be appreciated. also what type of lube should be used on the bolt aasy, would superlube synthetic grease be good. also have LSA weapons oil medium. thanks.

I will be the first person to tell you to clean it completely, really well, tear it completely apart and make sure there is no cosmoline or gunk anywhere. Make sure the piston operates smoothly as well as the bolt. Make sure the gas port hole is completely clear, sometimes they will gunk up. If the gun all original, I know you said matching numbers. NO funky aftermarket stocks or magazine? I would ditch those if they are installed. I would oil the crap out of everything and try again. My Norinco would eat any ammo I threw at it. As long as you are using FMJ it should be good. Start with a great cleaning and get back to us.

I would say that this advice is spot on. You can go to youtube and find videos of how to field strip and clean this.quote:Originally posted by 317wc

While a good cleaning sounds in order, there is a clue in that the mag "spits" out the last shot, and feeds to the side of the breech.

Hopefully, it is still tight in its' stock, and allows the mag to lock into place.

Try any different SKS magazine that absolutely anyone may have next time you shoot. It sounds as though (and you didn't say anything about rapidly firing) one or both of the feed lips on the mag you used could be bent up, or to one side, and aren't allowing the occasional round to chamber.
HP or FMJ will feed reliably through any functioning SKS, regardless of the bullet weight.
If, after cleaning the little piston and spring above the rear sight, wiping clean the gas piston and gas tube and scraping crap out of the gas port in the front of the gas tube(the part that stays on the barrel), cleaning out the extractor groove and the rest of the boltface, lubing the whole thing(LSA is fine) except the gas piston, and swapping the mag, it still acts badly; try some Tula, another batch of Wolf, Brown Bear or Silver Bear ammo because it's NOT the gun.

Sounds like the magazine is damaged or isn't installed fully. Disassemble the gun, clean it well, and reassemble correctly

the rifle is extremely clean but not lubed very much that is why i asked. no aftermarket parts on it at all. it got more reliable the more i shot it. i too thought it should feed everything and was surprised with the failure to feed. one of the rounds had the bullet pushed about half way into the case. i really think the problem is with the mag but don't know exactly what to look for.

If the back end of the magazine isn't clicked in fully the rounds will feed high and give you the problem you're describing. Flip the safety to "safe" (up) and push the triggergroup and receiver together, see if you hear a "click"
