    why won't these work [?][?]

Looking at them and they probably would work! It appears my problem is with the sharpness of the grab feet on the rings.

I do hate this Auto Thread Lock feature on this site. I was just beginning to get to the bottom of my issue and then it got locked.

The one question I never asked and should have is, Did the Marlin 57M come from the factory drilled and tapped to receive a standard scope base? I think it probably did because in my search I emailed Weaver for the exact distance between the screw holes of their #58/48058 base that fits the 57M. That answer is 3.275 inches and that is the correct distance on my receiver.

My problem is solved if I chose to go with a weaver base and just buy the standard one inch rings for a full size base.

The base and rings that came with the new to me gun would work fine except the new scope with 40 MM objective lens is a bit fatter because of the adjustable yardage ring. I can mount the new scope but will not be able to turn the adjuster as it does pinch on the barrel. The scope that came on the gun was a 40 MM but with no adjuster ring.

I was a bit frustrated because the two local gunsmiths who could easily have solved this are both gone this week for hunting. The guys at my local Gander are about as knowledgeable as my mother in these technical matters. Members here always have the answers if they would allow a thread to go that far.
