A friend gave me a old box of S & W shells in the white box. Box is stamped 38swp over 38 SMITH WESSON 148 GR LEAD, I was wondering if these were +P?

EDIT: r-s, that is what I suspected. But, if so, the OP's box would be marked ".38 SPEC", which he didn't indicate. I figured that the information he gave was either incomplete or inaccurate, which may have resulted in our giving him an incomplete or inaccurate response.
The stuff in the white boxes were provided to military shooters, also at the Camp Perry, "Bullseye" matches.
Below is a photo of similar ammo still available commercially. The wadcutter bullet is loaded to be flush with the case mouth. This is required so that it will function through the S & W Model 52 target pistol.

I think it's the other way around. The flush-seated wadcutter load is a very old design. Very accurate and used for years by NRA Pistol shooters. The S&W M52 was designed around the cartridge.

When I first started shooting. Using .38 Wadcutters out of revolvers, this is what the ammo looked like. It was only later when the 52 was almost universally adopted by Bullseye shooters. That the flush loaded bullet became the defacto standard, as it could be used in both revolvers and the 52 without any problem(s).
Sorry I have taken so long to answer back about my 38 SW shells. Box is marked 148 gr lead. They are not wad cutter bullets. Box is marked 38 SWP and under that is 38 SMITH WESSON 148gr LEAD. I do not thank they are +p but just wanted to make sure. Thanks
Sounds like plain vanilla 38 S&W ammo. The "white box" stuff was usually generic ammunition, often overruns from contracts.

You must have been one of those NRA Pistol shooters from the other side of the railroad tracks. Me and my buddies shot revolvers and only dreamt about getting a M52, someday, maybe. [;)][;)]
