Why and when was the 18" barrel restriction created? Should it be repealed?

1934. That barrel length used to apply to both rifles and shotguns but was later amended by Congress to reduce the length of rifle barrels to the current 16 inches.

Repealed or modified? All it takes is the Congress to change it...Don't hold your breath!

It's the same old evil gun concept. when the government started subsidizing criminals by restricting competition among gangsters the congress decided the way to solve the violence problem was to outlaw the gangsters tools, so they required permits for handguns and banned rifles and shotguns that could be reduced to handguns, so the minimum barrel length. Just like all the other attempts to solve problem A by banning product R, it's unsuccessful.

Very interesting. Looks like a few other folks were interested in the same subject.
