Im cleaning out family stuff and came across a Remington Sportsman 58 that was my grandfathers. I know nothing about guns (though I did shot target practice at camp haha)and am interested in valuing it: here is the info I have: total length is 4 ft; "20.GA for 2 3/4 or shorter shells" on barrell; seriel # 98030X; engraved pictures on hunting and initials "REP" on the side; dark wood handle. Thanks!

As I understand it, there are several different models of this shotgun, and the price differences are immense. My question is this, Is there anyway to distinguish the different grades other than wood?

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

I recently purchased a Sportsman 58 12 Ga. for 175 bucks. It's in very good to excellent condition. It seems by looking at the auctions here I got a pretty fair deal. Now I want to know a bit more about this thing, like any of my older firearms. Dont know if its a bad idea to post a complete SN from guns so I wont.

On the reciever the sn is in the 3000's followed by a V. 3xxxV. From what I could figure out by doing some basic math that they made these things for 7 years, about 271,000 of them. So I divide 271000 by 84 Months and come up with 3226 a month. Now since they started numbering them at 1000 mine would be under the 3000 one made, or in the first month. Am I missing something with the way these things were numbered? Also would a Sportsman 58 in Very good condition made in the first month of production be more valuable than those made later.

    Thanks

A friend of mine who is 92 yrs old took apart his model 58 to clean it and couldn't get it back together. I am not familiar with this gun but I got all the pieces in and now the bolt does not stay open when you pull it back. It's supposed to isn't it? It has a release button on the bottom. Did I do something wrong on the assembly?

I recently aquired a Remington Sportsman 58, in excellant condition. I had owned a Sportsman 48 in which I flat wore out. I loved the 48, so when I saw the 58 with it's engraving, vented rib and such I thought it to be better grade of the 48. Reading an article in an older Guns and Ammo, "The History of Remington Shotguns" it stated Remington came out with the model 58. Customers were complaining that it was wore out after a 1000 rounds thru it.

Can someone put my anxiety to rest on this one?

I am trying to find out the value of a Remington 12 Gauge Sportman 58.

Any Ideas on how to go about it or on the possible value itself?

Yeah, it's supposed to and yeah, you probably did something wrong. As to what; I can't help you there. I've only had the barrel and fore end off of mine and have not taken it completely apart.
