tape sticky removal

Purchased an older S&W in the box and the seller had taped the box together for shipping. Removed the tape and the box is okay, but was wondering if there a way to get rid of the sticky residue on the box w/o hurting anything? Thanks.

Go to your local Artists Supply Store or a Craft Supply Store AN BY A 2 1/2 OZ. bottle of Grumtine. It is a solvent called d'Limonene, which is available in larger amounts at professional house painters paint stores. You will know you have the right stuff if it smells like lemons or citrus peels. It will remove all non-water based adhesive tape marks from almost anything without ruining the surface.

Plain old naphtha (lighter fluid) will remove it with no damage to the box. "Goof Off" is a more powerful solvent and may remove the box finish. I am not familiar with the others mentioned.

Sometimes the best tape residue remover is more tape. Try using the tape to mechanically "pull" the old tape residue off by balling up (sticky side out) a wad of new tape and quickly pulling the balled-up tape straight off after pressing it into the residue you are seeking to remove. Keep doing this, moving the balled-up tape around on the old residue while rotating it so new tape keeps contacting the old residue.

You need to be very careful with solvents on paper/cardboard as you risk damaging the likely "coating/finish" on the box. Try to test any solvents you may want to try on an area not real visible, or already with damage.

Depends on the box. Lighter Fluid will remove dye off paper when you rub off the tape goo. As for more tape it might take off the paper underneath the goo. Mayonaise? Got me on that. Isn't that more of a lube than remover?
