    I assume it's a 39A? If so, it was made in 1988.

It is not a 39A has an octagon barrel, case colored frame, slim forend, and S shaped grip, with a 97 type magazine latch, and says marlin model 39.
    Thanks

Is there a letter(s) prefix to the serial number you show? Also, what does the barrel and upper tang markings read?
    What's next?

I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

The year of manufacture for serial number 1206 is Before 1883.

That's why I asked if it was a 39A and Kimi asked if it had a letter prefix. The Model 39 wasn't introduced until 1922.

I believe this is pre S prefix, the tang reads marlin mod. 39.
The barrel reads,22 S L & LR on the left and the top reads, marlin firearms corporation New Haven Conn. US Patented.
    Also has xx wood.

I have one the the 39 Model Marlins with out a letter prefix they were manufactured in the early part of the 1920s and no clear record of the date of each rifle. The rifle I have is in the high serial number range and so may have been manufactured in 1924. The rifle I have does not look great but functions like a fine clock and I love it, I hope you enjoy yours.

If the serial number is not preceeded by an S, or an HS, it is probably a first year Marlin Model 39 manufactured in 1922. Brophy, in his book Marlin Firearms, notes that those without a prefix would cover the range that yours would be in. As a matter of fact, Brophy notes that the earliest recorded Marlin 39 had the serial number 1002. Therefore, with yours being serialized with number 1206, should make it a highly desireable piece among Marlin 39 collectors, most especially if the condition is high.
    What's next?
