Please tell me your opinion on best handgun

Hello. I currently have a SW MP 9mm. I'm not really all that happy with the feel of it so I wanted to purchase a nicer one. Problem is my "dream" gun (Mateba revolver) I REALLY want is apparently not on CA approved list. [:(] So I was wondering what members could come forward and maybe mention their all time favorites are? Preferably not over 2K. Thanks for your time! Marc

Here's another vote for the Colt Series 70 45 ACP. . .or better yet one in 38 Super. And for a revolver choice you couldn't go wrong with an older S&W M27 with five inch barrel.

If you are talking semi-auto, I think a Browning High-Power is the best handgun. I prefer 9mm, but the .40 cal is just as good.

$2,000? I prefer the FM Argentinian Hi-Powers. They have the original single action design from John Browning and you can see them here on Gunbroker for as little as $350. But given you are in California and must abide by "the list", you would have to stick to the FN Hi-Power models.

If you want a reliable gun, I have had my .357 Mag Ruger GP-100 in my nighstand for 7 years. I would bet my life on that revolver anytime and anywhere. I paid $400 brand new for it in 2001 (in California by the way).

I also own a Sig Sauer P228 (bought in California) that has been flawless. The venerable Beretta 92F is legal in Cali, in both 9mm and .40 cal. An of course the grandaddy 1911 has many flavors that are legal in California, such as the Colt Series 70 already mentioned.

I myself prefer Kimbers. I would probably buy a Kimber Warrior II (sidearm of the Marine Expeditionary Force), which is California legal as well. As you can see, I am partial to the U.S. Military sidearms. Good enough for them then good enough for me.

The best handgun for you is the gun that fits you the best. A Glock may have great reliability, but if it doesn't fit your hand you will not shoot it well. You can buy a fully custom built Wilson 1911 that will win a ton of medals, but if it doesn't fit your hand you will never shoot it well. You can buy a custom XP-100 that will shoot 8" groups at 1000 yards, but if it doesn't fit your hand well you will never be able to shoot it to its ability. The best gun is the gun that fits you the best.

You can buy a Mataba in California, but the gun must have been in the state before it was banned. So if you can find one that is already here you can buy it.

hk usp in 9, 40, or 45 it they have the best feel and are very reliable. The weight is evenly distributed on thhem also. Glock is good too and cheaper but HK is my fav.

For personal protection and ultimate all weather condition reliability: I'd go with the Glock 22 40 S&W....If the grip doesn't fit you exactly the way you want, call Robar Industries in Arizona...they can shape a Glock grip to suit your needs.

S&W M29 Classic 5" 44mag loaded with 44spl+P is my bedstand choice. After that I've (2) S&W M59 9mms and a Glock M22 40cal. They are all ultra reliable and fit my hand like they were made for it. You can spend alot more for handguns, but in the end it only matters if they go bang and hit what needs hitting. The advice about finding out what fits you best is good. I advise new buyers to go to their local indoor range and feel up the rental selection and then shoot/rent the ones that fit them the best.

I love my CZ40P...but that may be a bit like the S&W MP. It has the Euro style grips that has less angle than the 1911 but curls under at the lower end of the grip.
