Will a Mohawk 600 barrel screw onto a Rem. 700 action w/o alteration? Thanks for the replies. KIX

1. Even If the threads were identical same pitch , angle etc.
2. Assuming they had the same number of threads and distance to shoulder
3. also would need compatible caliber for the long/short action
4. need caliber that had same case head diameter
5. Pray that headspace would be same after install.
Lesson: find a gunsmith.
Where you run into trouble and probably ought to enlist the services of a good gunsmith for this alteration are the last three points mentioned by Denwa (the cartridge for which the 600 barrel is chambered being compatible with the length of your 700 action; the rim diameter of the cartridge being compatible with the bolt face; and the headspace being within safe tolerances). There is also the issue of getting the 600 barrel to index -- line up -- correctly, once it's torqued into place.
A couple of these points are minor. A couple are -- not so minor. You can get a barrel taken off one action to index correctly on another, but it usually involves removal of material at the breech of the barrel and the barrel shoulder. The upside to this is that the chamber then needs to be reamed a like amount, and in the process any issues with headspace are taken care of. The downside is obviously having to spend more money than just for the component parts of your project.
Since I am one of the fools who builds sporting rifles around military '98 and small ring (pre-'98) Mauser actions, with all the work that's required to make them anywhere near as suitable as the multitude of Mauser-actioned sporting rifles that can be had, used, at low prices even today -- far be it from me to question the practicality of what another gun freak is thinking of doing. I do wonder, though, why you'd go this route when Remington's Model 7 carbine is available in a fairly wide range of excellent calibers. Or, when the barrel of a 700 can be cut and re-crowned, which would broaden the range of available calibers and be significantly less costly than the complete re-barrelling of the same rifle.
"Because I want to" is a perfectly valid response, by the way. Like I say, if I were practical I'd just buy a used Husqvarna from Sarco, or something along those lines, and have essentially one of the same guns I'm building from scratch.
What you're thinking of doing ought to be doable, but get a gunsmith involved from the start.
