fitting a stock

I just fitted a new stock for a friend's Rem.6mm mod 788. My question is how much tolerance should there be on the recoil lug on the barrel where it is put in the stock? Thanks for any info.

Any space will lead to a cracked stock.

    ljc,
With all due respect I would ask this question before you attempted a stock fitting. If you do encounter a problem with space you can remedy this easily, but I suggest you do not fire it until you comply with Duck and DCS. It's real good advice

The recoil lug needs to be locked in place except for the bottom surface.
Accuracy will suffer if not done correctly, among other things.....

    What about the forward surface?
I have a custom Forester that was glass bedded so tightly all around that the only way to remove the action was to install bedding screws and gently alternate tapping on the front annd rear until it finally came loose. Giving it about 2 thousands clearance on the forward surface has made this process much easier and accuracy is unaffected. No indication of problems. Is this a minor disaster waiting to happen, or is there some reason at work here?

That is what I figured no space. I just wanted to check with the experts.

RCrosby, a small amount of clearance forward of the lug will simply make disassembly easier, it won't hinder accuracy. Perfect fit to the rear is required to prevent recoil from shifting the action around in the stock. You also do not want to bed for contact at the rear of the receiver tang, it can cause splitting.
