You might also have a crush fit washer between the base of the FH and the barrel. This also applies pressure to keep the device in place. Heating will help quite a bit if there's any loctite on the threads.
Don't know if I did it properly or just got lucky, but I bolted my barrel in a vise at the front sight assembly. Not alot of pressure, just wanted to keep the assembly from turning. The FH came off very easily.
That front sight/gas vent is only held by a very small roll pin. You got lucky.
Heck, well it's about time the bread landed butter side up! IIRC, there are 2 solid pins left to right through the front sight base along the top of the barrel, which I assumed (incorrectly I guess) held the front sight to the barrel while that single cold rolled pin held the gas tube in place in the front sight. If the cold rolled pin holds the front sight in place on the barrel, what do the 2 solid pins do? ARs are a bit new to me, have built a few but still learning.
