Would anyone know about the .40-60 W.C.F. cartridge. What year was originally produced. Was it any good? I can't seem to find any information on it and any that you guy's might have would be appreciated.

Per "Cartridges of the World" 1972 edition..."The 40-60 Winchester was made for the Winchester Model 76 rifle. The rifle and cartridge was made from 1876 until 1897. The cartridge was loaded by Winchester until 1934. This is a DIFFERENT cartridge than th 40-60 Marlin!" The information goes on to say..."This is a bette hunting cartridge than the 44-40"
    Hope this helps!

Winchester also chambered the 40-60 W.C.F. in the Model 1885 Single Shot Rifle (from September 1885 - to circa 1914). It is an accurate cartridge in the single shot rifle, and is capable of cleanly taking any game animal in the lower 48 states.

There is a book written by Mike Venturino called
"Shooting Leverguns of the Old West"
There is a section about the 40-60 in it.
Performance level was supposedly close to 41 magnum.

thanks, maybe i'll pick-up a cartridges of the world book and do some researching of my own. You see my grandpa passed away and left a pretty big collection of stuff and lots of it isn't even stamped what it chambered for. So trying to match cartridges w/ their respective guns is pretty hard if yoou don't have the information on what gun a certain cartridge was meant to fit if you understand what I'm saying but thanks alot everyone. Might need your help again in the near future

    Chad,
It is also of interest that the famous stock detective, dryglucher and scout Tom Horn shot a 76 Winchester in 40-60. Read his book, or watch the movie staring Steve McQueen, it's a good flick.
    For what it's worth.

    Chad,

There is an abundant amount of collectors and experts here on this forum. If you have any questions about things like this, we would be glad to help. Bert H, is hands down the best Winchester expert that I know. But furthermore, we are all frothing at the mouth to see some pictures...we all love history, and the oldies.
