I want to buy a silencer for my Walther P22. My questions are 1.) Can only a class 3 holder ship to a class 3 holder 2.) can anyone own a silencer (if their state permits) and 3.) how much in additional fees and taxes are there.

    Backwards....

If you make the silencer (get paperwork done first) then it is a $5 tax, buy one (get paperwork first) then it is a $200 tax.

If you can buy a pistol, you can buy a silencer, at least on the Fed level. Longer background check, fingerprints, etc. Also, if you take it out of your home state, you have to notify ATF in writing. You'll need county sherrif to sign off on it - if he/she isn't willing, you can form a living trust to bypass this step (which you may want to do anyway so that multiple people can be in possession of the NFA item).

Check the sticky at the top of the page. If you decide it is something you want to do, then find a local C3 dealer in your area to help w/ paperwork and transfer.

Of course, before you do it you may want to try some of that super quiet Aguila ammo....

    1. It depends. If you are shipping out of state the suppressor has to be sent TO a FFL for transfer. Depending on what kind of Form (paperwork NFA items are transfered on) the item is on and what kind of FFL will depend on transfer cost.

    2. Yes anyone that can legally own a firearm can legally own any NFA item (including silencers) IF they are legal in your state

    3. Again taxes and fees will depend on the way the item is currently Formed and what kind of FFL you are using and what they charge. Assuming you are buying a new silencer on a Form 3 from a dealer cheepest you will get is $200 for the NFA transfer tax. $50 for the dealer fee (if you order it and just have it shipped to the dealer). If you state has sales tax add that.

As suggested above read the NFA FAQ in this forum section.

Iwana...... The $5 tax is ONLY for the transfer of AOW. ALL other fees are $200.

The tax to make OR buy a supressoer is $200, not $5.
The $5 tax is for buying an AOW. Making an AOW is still $200. A supressoer is not an AOW.

I see you live in TN. Here's a link to a list of Class 3 dealers in your state.

    http://www.nfadealers.com/#Tennessee:_

Go talk to one close to where you live. I've found Class 3 dealers are the best people when it comes to helping customers.

When you talk to your dealer, ask him about obtaining your stamp via the Trust method. It's usually eaiser and involves less BS to get done.

    Good Luck

You are going to spend $200 on the transfer tax.
Around $35 for the adapter for the P22 to fit the common 1/2-28 threads on US suppressors.
Between $250 and $450 for the suppressor itself.
There should not be a transfer fee if you are buying it from your local C3 dealer.

So call it about $600-$700 total.

I order and pay for mine direct using my dealer's FFL and SOT.
I am a very good customer and they do my transfers for free.
I do some stuff for them to pay them back.
