Well your budget gives you some wiggle room.. I like DPMS just fine, they make good rifles.

You could pick up a number of different brands of rifles in the 1200 range including several entry level piston driven guns. What are you looking for? Home defense, hunting, Varmint, Zombie killer?

Here are a few from other good companies.
    CMMG piston operated

There are several good ones out there within the $$ range you stated. A few months ago that could not be said. DPMS AR-15's are very good, as are the S&W, Colt, Rock River Arms, Stag, Doouble Star, and several others. The ones to look out for, and not to buy are ones that have Vulcan, Blackthorn, or Hesse Arms on them anywhere.

My personal preference is Rock river. But all the ones tsr1965 mentioned are good as well.

My experience with DPMS is mixed. I've seen some that function flawlessly. And, shoot great. I've seen others that the bolt wouldn't lock all the way into the lands, or even go all the way forward. I don't know who did the builds, as they were a big time supplier of AR-15 parts before they ramped up to build rifles full time.
Bottom line is if it functions correctly when you pick it up and use it, it should work well for you. That is unless you see a glaring mistake that should be corrected before you fire it. The Hesse, Blackthorn, Vulcan...stay away from, unless you like problems.

Basically the only ones to really stay away from are Vulcan/Hesse/Blackthorn. I see CAI also is selling one, depending on who actually built it will depend on if it is good or bad.

I have a number of Colt, Bushmaster, & Stag and have no complaints about any of them. I'm sure there are other good ones. This is just my experience.
It's too late for me, save yourself.

I don't generally open my mouth about weapons I don't personally own.
For that reason I'd recommend the stag or the bushmaster.
I've had no problems out of either.
    "CAVEATE"
Least someone get offended, the others may in fact be good, I just have no personal experience with them through ownership or hands on.
Stag and Bushmaster have been kind to me in that they have no failures to date.

I'm partial to the Colt, but most all the AR's listed here are just fine, cost less than the Colt.

Colt. You'll be glad you did if you ever decide to sell.
