Did Remington ever make a 240 weatherby in a Remington 700 bdl? I have a friend who has a Remington 700 bdl in a left hand and the barrel says 240 weatherby. If they never made them the barrel obviously is not original so what would the original chambering be to match a 240 barrel?

.240 Wby has same bore dimension as .243 & 6mm. Would need to be a long action.

No, while they share the same bore diameter, the cartridge cases are different in size.

Here are dimentions of the two:

    briguy,

The Remington 700 was never chambered for the .240 Weatherby according to the Remington website in their historical section. It would follow that this is a custom barrel of unknown origin.

Think of the .240 WBY as an '06 with a belt but necked down to take the 6mm bullets. The .240 WBY chamber requires a basic long action rifle originally chambered for a cartridge in the '06 class based on length and rim diameter. This would include the .25-06, .270 Win, .280 Rem., .30-06 and possibly the .35 Whelen if it was a release chamber. These cartridges have a 0.473 rim diameter.

The .240 WBY is a unique cartridge case which means that there is no parent cartridge case and so there is no other cartridge which can be fired in this chamber.

This is an excellent long range hunting cartridge. I've used it to successfully hunt Coues deer in the Southwest. It can do double duty in the varmint fields so long as the pace of firing is slow or spaced out by using other varmint rifles.

    Best.
