beretta 302 users?

Yesterday a buddy of mine was using a 302, when he pushed a round into the mag tube, when the carrier latch closed, it would let the shell pass the catch that held it in the tube and into the receiver....I'm sure this is an easy fix and possibly operator error but I couldn't figure out what was wrong....any ideas?

If none of our folks can help? You might consider posting to a shotgun specific web site. Or the Beretta firearms forum.

Shell latch and or spring, parts 94 & 95 in the schematic. Nine out of ten times, a good cleaning cures it. Powder residue and bits of shell plastic can get in behind it and make it stick.

Hard to diagnose not having it in hand. The carrier and shell stop (latch) work together, and if it ain't dirt, something is preventing that from happening. Never let "looks like new" fool ya.[;)]
Beretta has very specific steps on the 300 series for dis-assembly and re-assembly, that's why I gave you the link for the manual.
I would drop the trigger group, and give everything a good cleaning and lube. Compressed air will usually dislodge anything stuck behind the latch button or shell stop.
Double check #95 and #101A springs to make they didn't break, and they're installed right too.
