customer brought in 1100 with broke link. got new part and tore down , cleaned, etc. now i noticed the receiver has an M in the prefix of ser # but the barrel says 2-3/4 . with bolt in, the barrel will not go in far enough to install mag cap but will with bolt out. what gives here??

The barrel won't install unless the bolt is retracted and locked back. If it only seats when the bolt is removed, something else is broke.
The link rarely fails, the only two I've seen that crossed my bench, was from shooting 3" mags in a 2.75" barrel.
One was from a rusted out action tube and spring, that a 3" finished off.
The other was from a moron that thought because he had a magnum frame, it would still shoot 3" magnums with a 2.75" bbl. The whole inside of that receiver was beat to hell.
shell to open up... Depending upon the dia. of the forcing cone, A 3' shell will not open all the way... With this condition, pressures are increased... And with that in mind the 2-3/4" barrel has more than twice the area of gas ports which allows much more pressure in the gas system to move the bolt... Hence 3" shells in a 2-3/4"barrel will create havoc on the back side of the bolt and sometimes ruin the receiver...
Been there seen that, several of my customers just don't pay attention..
