My local pawn shop has a 4in.nickeled model 19-3 Smith & Wesson.
The grips are not original. It has pachmeyer rubber grips.
The screw for the rear sight adj is buggered up a little.
The front sight serrations have been painted red but little paint remains there.
The nickel finish is near perfect without any flaking.
Accounting for couple of small scratches Id say the finish is about 95%.
Lock up is tight and inside the barrel looks great.
What would be a fair price for it?(they are asking $550)
Can someone tell me from what years the 19-3s ran?
Thank you and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

EDIT:
Can someone tell me what the screw shown in the close-up picture of the rear sight posted by beantownshootah is called? Is it a leaf screw?
Ill need to know if I call S&W.
Thank You

67 to 77 for the -3's. Make sure the hammer and trigger are still cased like this one. To many nickel platted Smiths, have been bubbaed by the local bumper shop.

    EDIT #1,

Strangely? Smith calls it the "Rear Sight Elevation Nut".

Without the factory wood stocks I consider $550 a bit high. I would pay $500 if I had too (it's a great gun), but $450 make me happier. I doubt a pawn shop will drop $100, but you can ask.

Bottom line, $500 is reasonable if they will take it. I would not worry about the rear sight screw, and lots of shooters (myself included) put a bit of red paint on the front sight of these revolvers.

    Good luck.

I pretty much agree with that. $550 isn't "crazy", but its on the high side for a used 4" gun without original stock or box. $500 is a "fair" price, $450 is a "good" price. But whatever you pay, these guns aren't going DOWN in value, so even if you "overpay" a little bit, so long as you take care of the gun, in two years, natural appreciation will make you even again.

Personally, I always put a drop of red nail polish on my front sight. Makes it a lot easier to pick out against dark backgrounds, and if/when I decide I don't like it, it will come off in two seconds with nail polish remover!

Here's a buggered rear model 19 sight. . .had to wait many months for it to come into stock, but I dropped in a new sight blade from Smith (10 minute job) and its good to go now:

The large screw that goes in from the top(lock down screw?)is the one thats buggered up.
Are replacement screws hard to come by?

Not necessarily. Please do NOT take my word for it that this is the correct one, but I think so:

If not, you should be able to order the correct screw right from Smith and Wesson for only a few bucks. The issue is that these parts are typically backordered, and it may take a while for these to come in stock again (ie months).

Part #13 don't loose the plungers and springs.

It's a nut because it screws into a t slot stud.

Be careful with ammonia based solvents like Hoppes they can eat the flash layer of copper under the nickel and lead to flaking.

    Thanks,No solvents on the nickel.
I polished it with wiemans.Turned out beautiful.
I will try to get most of the powder residue off the front of the cylinder with an ink pen eraser.
Planning to dress her up with a nice set of grips.
Have a rear sight elevation nut on order.

This is a must have around the shop.. Way better than an abrasive eraser!!.. Works wonders on carbon build-up.. Might be able to find it locally- Maybe ACE hardware if not in a Depot/Mart/Auto Parts..

That's because it is a NUT that screws on a T screw [:0]
