where could i order custom ivory grips for a smith model 29. I would like a nice set but don't want to have to pay a fortune? As always thanks for your replies.

Is it possible to make new ivory grips look old? Papers that came with the grips say to rub the grips lightly with gun oil about onced a month to keep from scrinking and with handling this will yellow them. Any suggestions about aging? Thanks

I have an older Colt 45 automatic with real ivory grips, I'm sure they are elephant ivory, I was told the other day that federal law after June 26 2014 that it will be against the law to sell them or transport them or any thing else with ivory across STATE lines. Has any one else heard about this?

How can you tell genuine ivory besides looking at the grain?

How can you tell if Colt SAA ivory grips are factory? Do all factory ivory grips have medallions?

First off, are you sure it is ivory??? There should not be any "new" ivory being sold today. Real ivory gets its patina from natural aging, thats why 200 year old pieces look so good.

Genuine ivory should be treated with paste wax, not oil.
Ivory can be "aged" with proper application of potassium permanganate, but this is a job for an expert.

Bury them under the azaleas for a few months. The acidic soil ages everything.

New ivory grips are sold BY nutmeg sports With notarized Letter that they are PRE banned Ivory. Yes ivory can be stained BUT sort of like a Doug Turnbull Restored gun someone that really knows Ivory will be able to tell . I have seen them aged with both Tea as well as dark pipe tobacco.

Yep. Greg Martin told me people use tea to make ivory grips look old.

I diluted the PP solution by half,,,,,,you can see it's still a little strong but it's more in line with aged ivory. If I diluted it half again I think it'd be just right.








Mix a solution of vinegar / peroxide 50/50 to remove potassium permanganate stains on skin, might work on ivory.

If there is a stock pile here in the states(which there is), it can still be sold. It just cant be imported for commercial puropses.
