I'm not sure I'm following you. You're trying to adjust the windage without shooting it? I'd recommend shooting it before adjusting the sights.

Unless you plan to replace the front sight post with a Tritium one, there is no need to remove it to adjust the windage.

Krebs Custom makes a heavy duty front sight tool.

I have a cheapy no-name "C" clamp style AK sight tool that I use to adjust sights. I put a short piece of pipe over the arms of the tool to get more leverage. A box end wrench would work as well.

First of all, I don't really see how its possible to zero the gun without the sight post in place.

You can do a "rough" sighting in of a gun without shooting it by using of those laser bore-sighting cartridges, or certain other methods, but you do still need the sight post in place.

As mentioned above, its best to see where the thing shoots on paper before doing anything else. If your gun is really a nice custom build AK, it may well be sighted in just fine already (or at least close).

If you want to know how to sight in an AK, just see here. This video explains it better than I'm going to be able to do in a few words:

As mentioned above, if the post holder ("drum") is too stiff to move with the sight pusher using your fingers, you can increase the leverage a little by slipping something over the arm, or using a wrench.

In some cases the hole in the sight tool may not be large enough to allow the drum to move into it. So it SEEMS like the post is stuck, when in reality its your pusher blocking the drum. In a case like that you might be able to fix the problem by putting a few washers in between the gun and the pusher to give the drum room to move. You may also be able to drill out the hole in the pusher to make a larger hole so that the post drum can fit inside.

Next option, You can try upgrading to a better sight pusher; either or these will probably work better than a $7 gun show cheapie:

Other possibilities? Your sight drum might be corroded in place. Try putting a few drops of penetrating oil (eg Kroil) on there, letting it soak in for at least a full day, then try pushing again.

As a "last measure" you can chuck the whole front sight into a padded vice, make sure its well supported, then bang on the side of the sight with a WIDE brass punch and heavy hammer to knock it loose.
