Webly 455 indexing

I have a Webly 455 that will start to index but stops short of an alignment. How ever if you pull the trigger it moves and locks up tight. This is a little spooky to me! Are they to work like that??
If it is cocked the cylinder will move some but as the trigger is pulled it locks up. On double action it goes into lock up. Any info??? Thanks Ron

Almost all wheel guns have some play at lock up, that is why they have forcing cones. Some design allow the hand to push the cylinder into the bolt when the trigger is pulled all the way back. In actual shooting I think the bullet is gone before you get the trigger back that far.

Your pistol is pushing like 100 years old, parts could be worn some. Look at the hand, star, bolt and bolt notches. If it's a top break then the play in the latch and the hinge can be a factor too.

Some early revolvers have no separate cylinder stop bolt, and are only locked in place at moment of firing by the hand that turns cylinder and the cylinder stop projection on top of trigger, and they will usually allow some cylinder movement until trigger is pulled fully rearward.

But the Webley "Mark" series have both; is your cylinder locked in place until the trigger is pulled?
