Does it take a special wrench,
to go around that do-hicky
at the base of the barrel?

The answer is Yes...and No, there is a special tool used for proper alignment when re-placing a barrel on Rem.788s and 600s and 788s and 40Xs,and Model 7s this tool positions the recoil lug to B.D.C. (bottom dead center) so that action screws and lug align, it is not needed to remove the barrel from the action, a standard barrel vise and action wrench with proper fitted bushings will remove barrel.

    Hello 218Beekeep[:)]

If that Remington 788 barrel you are taking off is in .44 mag and the inside is OK, then I would like to talk to you about purchasing it from you. I really don't care what the outside looks like as it will be bead-blasted and "camo-finished" as the remainder of the rifle, so long as the inside is good then it will work for me.

    Best Regards[:)]
