I don't see where we can be of much help to you. No insurance company is going to write a policy based on "what the guys on the forum think". If you really want to pin down the value for purposes of your policy, you will need to get a professional gun shop to give you a written evaluation.

Personally, I think that the only gun insurance most folks need is a good quality safe. That should protect your guns from most thieves, fires, and misuse by others in your household. Are you worried about the monetary loss of (maybe) $1,000 worth of guns? That's NOTHING compared with the dollar & emotional loss you would suffer if some psychopath stole 1 of your guns & used it to shoot up a school, or if a member of your household used 1 to commit suicide; THESE are the losses you really need to be concerned about.

If you are determined to give some business to your insurance agent, have him write you a $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy; that will give you REAL protection against the possibility of losing everything you own.

What you paid is irrelevant. It's what they're worth now that's important. Nmyers is right though. Your insurance guy won't care what we tell you or what you tell him. You'll have to get them appraised by a gun shop. Excellent condition to you isn't the same as it is to me. And be sure and get fire and theft replacement value. Or you'll get $65 for your Marlin 30-30 not what a new one costs.

nmyers... you talk a little too much.
First of all.... my brother was killed when he shot himself with my grand dads 38. Don't try telling me what a real loss is.
Second... I have a gun safe and I believe in trigger locks.
Third... I am itemizing all of our posessions in the house to insure the whole lot. Not just the guns.
You may think I am a little hasty in my reply but when someone trys to tell me what a "real" loss is or how to protect or properly store my weapons I get little pissed off.
I'll take the suggestion on the appraiser though.

The first thing you need to do is ask your agent how much coverage towards personal firearms is standard in the policy. My homeowners will cover up to $3,000.00 without an appraisal. You may not need to give them a list of your guns( the appraisal)if there is enough coverage there automaticaly. In that case I would just take a really good set of photographs and record the serial numbers and make/model on the back of each one. Store the photos either in a fireproof box or in a safety deposit box.

I don't want to dissapoint you, but, I'm pretty sure I could replace all the guns you listed, including some of the ones you traded, for around the $3,000.00 limit in my policy. The Browning (depending on model) and the mini-14 are the only guns on your list that might bring a premium around here. The traditional styled muzzle loaders are $100.00 or under guns nowadays. Everybody wants inlines. Mossbergs are decent utility guns, but, don't bring alot used. The Marlins are $200.00-$300.00 guns depending upon condition. Keep in mind WalMArt sells the 30/30's for under $300.00 new. Around here most sixguns bring under $300.00 used, You might get more for the Ruger because it's a 44 mag.

SDE-I see "12 posts", you haven't been around long.
Maybe if you had been, you would have not attacked nmeyers as you did.
He is one of the more helpful and level headed posters on GB.
He or anybody else gives there best opinion, with some additional ideas for an "all around" reply.
He, I or few I know who post are going to surmise your loss, whether it be from a .38, a car wreck or Twin Tower's attack.
Yes, a loss like yours is emotional, I should know- I too lost a brother, my only brother and it was my Dad's 12 Ga Ithaca (accidental, for clarification).
To make your stay at GB more enjoyable, for both yourself and others-you might want to get a handle on your emotions.

As suggested before, check with your agent. Replacement insurance on my homeowners is $1000.00 for firearms. For a couple bucks more replacement value up to $5000.00. Anything more than that, they want an itemized list. Your over the $1000.00 but your under the $5000.00.

YOUR GUNS HAVE A RETAIL VALUE OF BETWEEN $2500.00 AND $3000.00 DEPENDING ON CONDITION AND TIME OF YEAR. I BUY MY GUN INSURANCE THROUGH THE NRA. BEST PRICE AND THE BEST SERVICE. GIVE THEM A TRY,

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

Well-said Springcreek. I can hardly believe the rare but nonetheless disturbing churlish replies that show up here from time to time. Neal, I am reminded of the expression that no good turn goes unpunished. Thankfully one doesn't encounter this foolishness too often. I hope you will not be discouraged from continuing your thoughtful and helpful contribution to this forum. Best, Jim

WHAT A CROCK!!! Next time you boys reply to a post... Stick to the question. I asked about gun value. Somehow you boys took that as "Hmmm, I think he is asking me what I think about proper gun storage. I think I'll tell him what a real loss is too."
Thats how it came across. Thats how it was taken. Like I said, stick to the questions... boys.
To the others that stuck to the question with their answers... Thanks!

You don't catch on fast, do you?
You're the type that some will respond to and hope to "pacify".
    Most will ignore.
    Emotional help is still recommended!

They can ignore if they like. Atleast they know when not to offer useless information.

I got an idea why don't you go to your local gunshop or Borders bookstore and buy yourself a current edition of The Blue Book of Gun Values. I'm sure members of this forum would gladly help you appraise a few firearms but every single gun you own. That's asking a little much.
