What is the best way to drill the gas ports on a 870 barrel to be used on a sportsman 58? Will a drimmel tool work? Also, can you put a 3" magnum barrel on one without it damaging the reciever? The barrels that it cam with are both 2-3/4".

and tested it last weekend. Works great!
I wanted something shorter than the 30" goose barrel, and purchased a 20" imp. choke with iron sights.
The way that I started was take the forearm piece off and mount the 870 barrel to the receiver.
Now you can see where the gas ports go from the inside of the tube.
Mark the holes with a marker of some sort or a pencil.
Now take the barrel off and center punch the two areas.
As for the diameter of the holes to drill,I don't recall but you can size the correct drill from the old barrel to get an idea.
Also you will notice then that the holes are not perpendicular, which means any good electric drill will suffice. In my case I use a cordless.
If you have a vise, it will help tremendiously, I just use allot of old terry cloth towels to prevent marring the surface.
When done drilling you will have two holes and looking inside the barrel you will see some burrs. I cleaned them up with a wooden dowel rod with emery duct taped to it.
Clean everything up and make sure your ports are unobstructed.
Does the bottom of your receiver say magnum near the area where you load the shells? If so, it's very much like mine and can use both 2 3/4 and 3" shells.
If it doesn't say Magnum, I really can't help you there.
I would say that if your magnum barrel is identical to your present barrel, and it slides right in, Go for it.
Otherwise if in doubt check with a Gunsmith.
Oh, I forgot one other thing, If the end cap is adjustable like mine, it's there for adjusting high power loads H(3") and low power loads
L(2 3/4").
