Need some info from the experts. I have a Smith & Wesson model 29 Classic (29-5) blue with a 5" barrel, serial #BKR73##. Anyone know much about this gun? By the way, the finish is something like a pearl blue...almost chrome blue. Any info on this as well?

Thanks in advance.

According to the 12th edition of Firearms, there were only 500 Model 29's 44Mag's with a 5" bbl manufactured in 1958. All others are 4", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8" bbls. these are very rare and very expensive. Make sure you know the source / history of the gun. Couldn't find anything on the blueing.

Roach- The "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" puts this gun's manufacture date around 1992. That was when the 5th engineering change (29-5) occurred with a 5 inch barrel. Sorry, there wasn't anything about the finish. Sounds nice though.

Not sure exactly what info you're looking for, but the 29 Classic (in 5", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8") was in production from 1991-'94 in the 29-5 and 29-6 engineering changes. Serial prefix BKR is probably from 1992. As you have noticed, these revolvers have very nice blueing. This blueing (and high degree of polishing) nearly mimics the finish found on the pre-WWII S&W's.

They are also factory drilled & tapped for scope mounting. With the cylinder open, you'll notice there are three holes in the top-strap of the frame. Front sights are interchangeable with no tools required. Hogue rubber grips with S&W medallions were supplied as standard factory equipment. These guns also include the "Endurance Package" features that first appeared in the 29-3E change around 1988.

    I've got a 5" Classic and it's my favorite all 'round .44 Mag. [;)]
