Why are M-44 rifles so cheap? Are they good for a military rifle collection? Are they like the Japanese Ariska rifle, doomed to the junkheap of history?? These questions perplex me, please help![?]

Yes the M44 would be a good collectible. They are Mosin Nagants, so they are very rugged and reliable. The only awkward, screwball thing about this action is that the safety is difficult to employ. These guns are no sniper rifles, but will shoot minute-of-deer. You can get a 3 inch or 4 inch group at 100.
These guns were made at the end of the bolt action era, the end of WW2 and later. They were made in vast quantity. Now that the commies have released these huge quantities of M44s they are unbelievably cheap.
They are a good collectible, and lots of guys hunt deer and hogs in the brush with them. And, if you miss the hog, you can take him on man to man with the bayonet.

The refinished ones would be OK if you were to want it for shooting purposes, but for collecting, get one that is numbers matching still in the grease... Still only going to set you back a little over $100. Leave it in the paper and grease and maybe in 100 years it will be worth something. For that matter, buy 2 and shoot one.

Why does everyone feel the need to burn that much powder?
