I'm Sorry!
I'm what you call an "IMPULSE BUYER".
Been wanting a M1,1'st one I've seen
for under $500.Put it on lay-away.
Folding stock,flash supressor(or whatever it's called).
Did I screw up?

Opinions on these commercial M1 Carbines run hot and cold; some guys swear that they are great guns and a real bargan compared with GI Carbines. Other folks have very few good words to say about these post war commercial copies. My own opinion, based on many years of experience, is that the very early guns (made before 1969/70) used mostly GI surplus parts and were pretty good guns. The later production used a a lot of in house production parts- or Asain contract parts, a redesigned operating system with totally non standard parts, a different bolt assembly, cast aluminum trigger housing and a bunch of other changes that made the guns less than reliable and trouble prone. There were a number of models available over the years, but I don't recall Universal offering a folder as a factory option. Iver Johnson (who bought out Universal in 1983) did offer their carbines with folding stocks so yours could have easily had one of these fitted along the way. The flash hidders were very common accesssories and also could have been added at any point in time. Let us know how you like the gun when you fire it and I hope that you got a good one.

I had one years ago. It was a good shooter, but never really had any value to it.

Is the lay-away non-refundable? It sounds like you are experiencing some buyer's remorse already. Maybe the guy would be willing to work with you and let you put your money into something else you know you will be happy with for now (we all have a wish list don't we?). That would be a win-win situation. Get the M1 Carbine you really want next time.

These are not difficult to find...so don't feel like this is your only opportunity. I know the spot you're in...except with me it involved a motorcyle. I thought I was lucky to have found this thing and later found that they were all over the place once I knew where to look. You will likely find a very nice arsenal rebuild for about $500-$600 if you look around some. Buy a reference guide for this rifle and "bone-up" some meanwhile so you know what you are looking at once you find a few somewhere. I have one such Winchester that I like very much. It looks good, shoots great, and has some collector appeal if I decide to sell it someday.

Go for it Bobby.....just cause some else don't like em don't mean you can't enjoy it.....besides it's an investment, a piece of WWII history......you can always trade it in on something different.....Hay I've payed a little over on something myself and I got it then, not next year......BEST OF LUCK.....john.............................(PS: all the hip shooters, I realize it is a commercial weapon.....I'm talking about the design)

I've got a couple of them I picked up in a trade several years ago. They're kind of fun to shoot. I've never had any problem with mechanical function, but I've only put a couple hundred rounds through them. If you're just looking for a shooter, it should do you fine.

    Bobbywins,
I've got two Universal's in .30 carbine. One is the U.S. G.I. clone and one is a sawed off model called an "enforcer". I've used the rifle to deer and hog hunt with no problem. The enforcer is a hoot to shoot, but very hard on unprotected ears. Soft point (lead) type bullets don't cycle real well in either, FMJ no problems at all in either.

The enforcer was a gift to my father in the late 1960's and he gave it to me just before his death in 1991. The carbine was given to me by a good friend that bought the carbine a couple of years before the riots in Ft. Lauderdale/Dania area in South Florida to protect his business property. I guess both of these Universal products would be considered early models based on Mark Christian's information. Good Luck with your new purchase

Hopefully the price was over $400, but less than $500 (self-interest at work here; I have 2 that I paid under $400 and would like to see them appreciate!).
Never had a problem with 1; other one separated the op rod at the gas piston weld. Cost $6 to mig back on @ Troy's. VERY enjoyable to shoot, cheap ammo, don't think I'd go deer hunting with it though, unless I was using my Blackhawks' silhouette load with a Rem. 125gr. psp over almost 7 grains of HS-7 and CCI 450 primer. This load works very well in my Blackhawk and feeds well in the M-1.
I've also tried the Hornady 100gr Short jacket and the Speer 85gr for a boost in velocity.

    BOBBY:

I HAVE AN IVER JOHNSON IN STAINLESS THAT I HAVE NEVER SHOT. THEY TELL ME THEY FUNCTION WELL AND SHOOT PRETTY GOOD. I, LIKE YOU, HAD ALWAYS WANTED AN M1 JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING ONE. I MAY SELL SOON TO MAKE ROOM IN THE SAFE. BUT, AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE I WAS TICKLED PINK. AFTER I SAW THE VALUE IN THE BLUEBOOK I LOST A LITTLE OF MY EXCITEMENT. MAYBE I COULD REGAIN THE EXCITEMENT IF I TOOK IT OUT AND SHOT IT. HAVE FUN WITH YOURS.[;)][;)][;)]

NO, I'M NOT EXPRESSING ANGER! I TYPE WITH CAPS BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE THE USE OF ONE HAND!
