That serial number doesn't look right; are you or am I missing something? The G prefix started in 1970 with S#G941901 according to my Madis book, Winchester Dates of Manufacture.

    Hello fellows...

This is (I believe) a case where the information contained in Mr. Madis' handy serial number reference (and often copied into other texts) is out to lunch. Based on personal observation, I believe that the serial numbers for the Model 70 were started anew when the "G" prefix was created, and that serial number 941900 was the last number in the old sequence. I can't prove that theory, but I strongly believe it. Unfortunately, many of the various Winchester Models that are listed in Mr. Madis' serial number listing (and reprinted by several other sources) are inaccurate to say the least. Some of them are terribly inaccurate... the Model 1885 Single-shot for instance (which I will correct in my future reference book). For all of the older Winchester Models, it is always best to contact Waddy Colvert (the research specialist) at the Cody Firearms Museum when trying to determine the precise DOM of a particular Winchester firearm. For nearly anthing made within the past 40 years or so, contact Winchester directly, as they still have their own records for the newer made arms.

    BertH,
I think you got it right. I,ve been fooling with Winchesters for many years. Here are a couple of examples of two model 70's that I had at one time. The first one had a serial # in the 700,000 range and I bought that gun used in 1970. The other one was a 458 mag with #
    G 1374xxx that I bought used in 1985.

So I can't see where the one G 29323 was made in 1992. Do you?

Hello bullelk... no, it doesn't make much sense to me either... unless Winchester is serializing specific variants of the Model 70 with their own serial number ranges. I haven't heard of such, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible.
