Winchester 73

This '73 was part of a trade some years ago and I am curious about the "filler" that is in place of the original rear site. I requested a letter in 1993 that stated the rifle was 44 cal, 26" octagon barrel, plane trigger, received in the warehouse 9/23/1899, shipped from the warehouse on 9/30/1899, and one other arm in the order. The cleaning rod is missing as is a part of the tang site. The barrel is marked 44 WCF and the elevator is marked 44 CAL. I would be interested in your opinion of condition and possible value. How rare is a 30" octogon barrel on a 73.

Who could I contact about doing a restoration for me on a Win. 73 rifle that I have.

James D. Gordon's survey of the Winchester 1873 included 2889 rifles with 118 having a barrel length of 30 inches. Most of these rifles were .44 caliber, followed by calibers .38 and .32.

EDIT: 27 were .38 caliber in Gordon's survey.

Based on personal observation, a 30-inch barrel on a Model 1873 is far from being "rare", and it would be more accurately described as "uncommon".
