Can anyone tell me what year this was made? Marlin Mod 1894 Microgroove Barrel 44 Rem Mag Gold Trigger Serial Number 201989XX?
Thanks!!
1980, Great. Thanks rufe! Couln't seem to get the Marlin site to work. This might be kind of dumb question but can 44-40 ammo be shot in 44 Rem Mag rifles? 44 Special? or just 44 rem mag? Thanks for all the help.

.44-40 ammo will not shoot in a .44 magnum rifle. .44 Special will safely chamber and fire in a .44 magnum rifle, as the Magnum is based on the Special case extended by about 1/10th of an inch. This was done in order to keep magnum rounds from being chambered in guns made for .44 special only. To get the magnum velocities, the pressures are increased to drive the same diameter/weight bullets faster, and the increased pressures might damage a gun made for .44 special only.
Sometimes functioning isn't as positive with the shorter .44 Special case in the .44 magnum rifle, so check functioning to made sure it is a go if you use it for hunting or defense.
If your rifle will feed .44 Russian, then you can shoot them, as well. Also, DO NOT use Full Metal Jacketed, or spire-point ammunition in that tube-magazine-fed rifle. Use only lead flat-point, lead soft-point, semi-jacketed hollow-point, or lead (round-nose; semi-wad cutter, if they will feed) in that magazine, to avoid a "chain-fire" in the magazine.

To be clear, you don't want to load more than one pointy nosed bullet in a tubular magazine, because a bump can cause the nose of bullet #1 to bang into primer #2, setting off round #2, which then sets off round #3, which then sets off round #4, etc, ruining your magazine, gun, day, and possibly anatomy.
But there is nothing intrinsically unsafe about shooting pointy bullets through the gun. As mentioned, Hornady mades "lever revolution" ammo that uses bullets with soft polymer points that are specifically designed for leverguns like this one and perfectly safe to use.

Even hard pointy bullets are safe to fire through a gun like this if you load them ONE AT A TIME, that is you do NOT put more than one round in the guns magazine.
Along those lines, its even possible to safely load one pointy round in the chamber and a second one in the magazine. That's two rounds total, and its enough for most hunting situations. Again, so long as you limit yourself to no more than one round in the magazine, you'll be OK.
Thanks guys, you gave us lots of information on it and think we understand it now. BUT, just one last question -- What is the difference between 44 REM MAG and 44 MAG?? Are they one in the same and either can be shot as long as firearm is marked either? Can pistol or rifle marked 44 mag also shoot 44 rem mag and visa-versa? Thanks again for everything.
Yep, same thing.. Just like .357 S&W Magnum is also called .357 Mag..
