Is it pre or post ban?!

I bought a Norinco M14 Sporter but the flash suppressor was cut off or removed. The gun was allegedly bought 14 years ago (should be pre ban if made prior to Sept 13, '94) I wont go into all of the story...the short of it is I can not find any info to track the serial number to find out for certain. I wish to put a muzzle brake on it vs the suppressor. Which should be legal provided no bayonet lug if post ban...from what I have been told & interpreted from ATF's "its a nasty evil gun" regulations/laws. Of course there are some of my co-workers that say just put one on it. I wouldn't unless I knew for sure it was pre ban to to be on the legal side.

Anybody got any ideas or knowledge to this?

How's about a "to the best of my recollection" answer? I haven't had one of these come through my shop for 8 or 9 years, but the last one I sold had a device on the muzzle that looked for all the world like a G.I. flash suppressor from the top or side, but was solid instead of slotted on the bottom side. After the ban they continued to be sold, but the whatever was cut off just in front of the sight--only the front sight and castle nut remaining on the muzzle. This looked odd, and no one ever ordered another through my dealership. If this is the arrangement yours has got it was sold post-ban.

That's all that is left on mine, front sight/castle nut. I am sure that I had seen one with the unmilled flash suppressor post-ban wise. I had never seen one like mine. It looks kinda incomplete and idiotic w/o it. [xx(]

Oh yeah, I was also told that the castle nut would be welded to "prevent" removal, on post ban. Mine isn't and doesn't appear that it ever was.
