1873 Colt SAA Rebuild?

About two or three months ago I posted a question about getting a new barrel for a blackpowder Colt SAA .45 cal., serial # 39,XXX. One of the responses I got said that I should return it to the factory for a complete rebuild. They said that a friend had on redone at a cost of about $1,100.00. and it was beautiful.
I called Colt Customer Service today, and they refused to talk to me about it. They said that they haven't done that kind of work on blackpowder Colts for years. Is there another part of Colt that will do this work, maybe the Custom Shop? Does anybody know?
If not Colt, is there another reliable source for this work? The part # all match, but the patent dates will have to be re-stamped.

Thank you,

Taperloc.

I'll warn you up front, he is not cheap. He is the best though. I grew up going to his fathers now out of business gun shop. I have had his restored guns in my hands they are AWESOME!

I second what "woodsrunner" suggested. Doug Turnbbull has an excellent reputation-costly. Guess he would not be in businss if he did not perform. Also, he has a contract with :Colt.
Many others offer services but I believe Doug does an excellent job.
Check out "Gun List" for engravers-bet Doug has one lined up for this restoration. Talk it over with Doug. A restoration is just that. If for self gratification, your call. Perhaps worth more/to you/ if not restored. As it is your gun, my opinion only, do what you wish. A gun can be only original once. Question: What became of the Brown Bess?
I do remember it had a short barrel and the photos you sent me were
not conclusive. Still have it? Just wondering. 101

If you want just a rebarrel, contact Fred Rose in Pagosa Springs, CO. He has quite a few first gen barrels and can fit it for you or rebuild your gun. Turnbull is very high and the wait is over a year. You do understand that a gun made that early has an iron frame and is suitable for blackpowder only...

Ten or twelve years back a west coast authority swapped a lot of my original new condition 1st gen parts. The gun was a mint 1903 Colt rebuild to 38Spl that I wanted converted to 44Spl.. I'm still steaming over it. Examine your parts thoroughly and make sure you get all your original parts back.
